Do my tutorials suck?
Today Derrick Niehaus, a blog reader, sent me this comment in Line Rider creation game tutorial 4:
“AHAHAHAHH someone stole your tutorial completely and made it into a game.. here
thats so funny! they didnt even change the line color.. or get rid of the bouce counter.. or the circle where the ball had been”
He was right… I went to the page and what I saw was the **same** example I provided in the tutorial with more “levels”.
The game is on the homepage too.
The question now is: Do my tutorials suck? I mean, if you copy a game without changing anything, maybe the tutorial was not so clear.
What do you think about it?
Anyway, I will not stop polluting the net with my tuts… and I am going to release soon a game to show how a bounce game should be made.
Meanwhile… LOL!
Tell me what do you think about this post. I'll write better and better entries.

You need to contact AddictingGames to show them where the “Inspiration” for that game came from. And judging from the fact that the collision detection on the blue circles in the game uses the bounding boxes, its not a particularly high-quality flash game.
Your tutorials are excellent. How else would I be able to make good collision detection code in anything I do? How would I be able to make bounces? This is the only place I have found other than the tutorial on the N-game that helps you understand how a proper bounce works.
The only pollution being made here is by people who think they can get away with this stuff.

your tutorials are amazing, I wanted to make a lash game to impress my friends, but I knew nothing about flash or acionscript and your tutorials have basically tought me action script and flash. I’m working on a multiplayer game. Using most of the skills your tuts have tought me. :]

Hey. They can be polished a little bit, contact me and I can tell you how, but just cause some guy published some cheesy game does not make him a developer. Keep producing tutorials and do not worry about that guy. He will not be able to publish much of anything anyways by not learning. Keep up the good work and dont loose heart.

I’d agree that your tutorials are absolutely awesome down to the last part. You explain what’s going on so people can understand it.

Just some people are too lazy to do anything by theirserves (sorry if this word is not this way, hope you gonna understend me). I agee - people sucks, not you tuts. Your tutorials are excellent. I’ve been searching the web for a place I can reference code and code concepts so I increase my workflow and not bog myself down with figuring out the physics and collisions and such. They’re so easy to understand it’s like running into a barn wall. Derp… haha… thanks for putting this stuff up.

As for the stolen content, it happens. Obviously you don’t put your premium stuff on the tutes for free, you put stripped-down versions that only idiots steal.

Don’t mind him, he’s just a douche. Whoever uses someone else’s game and modifies 2 things to make a few bucks on AG must be a giant loser. I mean, that games not fun AT ALL. It’s just gay. Your tutorials do not suck. You have a great website, I will be blogging about your site and all the great Flash Tutorials I have found here (in a couple of days). I found your tutorials great because not only do you show us the source, but then you explain it line by line, and sometime you have the Flash example after you explain it. This is awesome, you can visualize what the source code (plus your line by line explanation) actually does.

Ignore those idiots who say your tutorials suck coz they don’t.
I was playin this really old game on an emulator (can’t remember its name… i’ll comment it later if I remember) but the basic idea was to bash a button to make the athlete sprint in a race. I was trying to create something like it on flash but I don’t really have much of a clue on doing it. Could you possibly do a tutorial on something like that please
The game is such an awful copy, it looks like they haven’t tested it at all… To see this for yourself simply go to the level where there are moving red lines. You’ll find that you die without touching them. This is because of the way the lines have been made - I know this because I encountered an error like this in a game I played. I worked on it and sorted it out, this guy has just cut, pasted and published.
I made a game based on your tutorial,. which I must say was extremely helpful, and I thank you. But I added in my own things, and changed it around. This guy… people like them annoy me : /

hi, i reckon ur tuts r great but some r a little tough to understand and folo, i think a great improvment on them could be to include plenty of screenshots showing ur progress and explaining what you doing. i no that would really help me.

maybe you need to emphasize the point that people should use these ideas and learn actionscript and their own creativity to make a game of their own…even just changing colours! putting comments in the actual code and stuff like that. but your tutorials certainly don’t suck.

It isn’t your fault, your tutorials are great. You let us understand the meanings of the codes. Maybe some people don’t get it that they should learn and not copy.
