I find it hard to quantify my first programming language. Is it Applesoft BASIC where I peeked and poked bits to break copy protection?

Was it Pascal in school writing a simple print loop for a project?

I usually count my first language as AutoLISP where I actually wrote full on programs to help me do my CAD job.

Regardless, your priciples are definitely excellent regardless if you moved on to Assembly, C, Delphi, PHP, VB or my new favorite (to learn) Boo.

I do actually still use Notepad for coding, although I’m trying to wean myself of it and use Notepad++ more. I also use Dreamweaver MX and PHP Designer.

I mostly know PHP and HTML, some Actionscript 2 and MySQL. I’m trying to learn AJAX, and did do some ASP, but found it similar enough to PHP to cause confusion.

First language I ever used was Spectrum BASIC.

I’ve been using PSPad for ages, too, but recently jumped over to Komodo Edit. It needs a little longer to start but the wait is more than worth it. It’s built on the Mozilla platform and supports Firefox-style extensions and even features live PHP validation of your files.

I think, point 4 and 9 in your list are most important. You will never get to learn about the tricks, pitfalls and several ways to accomplish something in a language just by self-educating yourself with the help of Google. And I found 3 languages to really keep up with is the maximum.

I’m curious about how much languages others are really proficient with.

That’s a great post. You should never be scared to learn a new language – like you point out, it’s the first one that’s the hardest. I wish that big bits of my brain weren’t taken up with Lingo and Visual Basic though!
