The MochiAds funnel

This is a post I always wanted to write, but I waited until I had some numbers big enough to make sense.

Before I start rambling, please notice I never put fancy MochiAds banner here and there, without any sense like I do, in example, with AdSense ads.

I simply put links to MochiAds in posts where I talk about game monetization.

So we can say people click on my link only when they read the post, not just to see what’s beyond that banner.

So, my Mochi referral stats say I sent them 4,520 visitors. 668 of them signed up and 33 reached the minimum $100 payout requirement.

What does this mean? That if you aren’t afraid of learning some Actionscript and game design (and in this blog there is a lot to learn), you can be in that 5% group that sign up and monetize Flash games.

5% is an interesting ratio, and I think it will raise as soon as all people just a few bucks away from $100 will reach the goal.

It would be interesting to know your ratio… and if you haven’t signed up yet… sign up to MochiAds!!

I confess. I’m one of the 3,852. But I’m going about it a bit differently. I’m writing the game first and _then_ working on monetization. When that day comes I promise I’ll come back and sign up through this site.

You can even remind me when that time comes! I’m blogging about the journey on my website. Check it out if you get a chance. I’m always looking for advice from more experienced developers.

    Cheers and thanks for sharing!

    Nice …

I’m in the 85% losers of your readership.

  3. Dejv on June 18th, 2009 9:34 pm

I’m in 15% group, release one small game just for fun (http://cottage.zip-zapgames.com) and made about $3.

I confess, i haven’t had much success with mochiads so far. about $3, like Dejv.

  7. Wackiegames on June 19th, 2009 9:38 am

    Hey!
I saw this post and needed to awnser it.

I began action script a year ago, the emanuele platform and ball movement tutorial where GREAT. Just 2 weeks ago i thought about publishing some of my games on “Newgrounds,Mochiads”, that worked out quite good. I received +-300$ for it. wich i find quite awsome :D I have alot more games to publish and i think it’s a fun hobby.

first game named: “Crystal Crunch”. :D

I suppose I’m in the 95% of people still trying to make “next big game” and for sure I’ll die before to release the “next big game”.

    :D

With mochiads I made 2$, with sponsorship I made 550$ with two games released, and I spent all the money drinking beers, not bad at all. ;-)

    @Quintus Kilsdonk
I just played Crystal Crunch 2 and it’s pretty cool, good job.

I am still work towards my first pay out, I’m one of the 635. I have a few games about to be published and more in various stages of work.

I’ve not made $100 on mochiads. But I have already made over $10000 by three flash games.
One outsourcing for a company’s gamble game
    One for an exclusive license.
One for a sponsorship,And they allow me to included mochiads in the game if I’d turned off ads on their sites.
    sponsorship is the least one.
Using mochiads you really really need to spread the game to a lot of site to make the money. Maybe I still need to put a lot work on it.

eCPM is tooooo low on mochiads

  14. Sparkky on June 21st, 2009 5:02 am

I started doing games a while back after reading the start of your monetizing..
Then I actually got serious about it.
I did a maze game in about 20 hours after seeings your box2d maze.
Interestingly enough you just released a game using the same platform.
Few difference. I just got an offer from Addicting Games for it, so if you happen to see a game involving a maze, Yes, it was inspired by your blog :)

a little bit looser! yes, i confess. but i know i am not going to make any ‘Next big Games’. i was totlly inactive this month but now everything fine. earned a few bulks from MochiAds. yes and sure i am going to create a lot of stuff from now.

thanks emanuele for reminding me that i am kind a loser!!!! LoL

Logged in, and now to make a flash game :D

  17. The truth on July 8th, 2009 3:35 pm

5% looks like a ton , BUT !!! you ‘forgot’ to say how long took them to reach the payout (probably more than a year), also you ‘forgot’ to say that the quality of flash games is SKY ROCKETING . What made 100 a year ago won’t make 20 today.

I just released my first game that I made just to learn Flash and Action Script.

    http://goodcleangames.com/favorites/math-challenge_v2/

Doesn’t seem to do very well, I made 87 cents so far.
I am among the 635 that are still trying to make the next big game :)
I also seem to have the problem that it doesn’t spread very well. I did submit it to flashgamedistribution.com but it doesn’t seem to help. The game is probebly not fun enough but strange enough I do get 99% of the impressions from arcade.fi for some reason. So it seem to be popular in Finland.

I went for a self sponsored game and it does drive some traffic to my site. I made a few buck on google from the traffic I get from the game. Still not much.
It is a simple game though that I made just to learn Flash so I guess I have to come up with something better.

So is sponsorship the way to go these days?

Hey ! You gonna get your 20 bucks for cooptation !
I just signed in for Mochi adds and published my first “one day” flash game there.
What’s bad : it took me two weeks to make it ! (I was dead sure I could make it in one day)
What’s good: I’m full of youth and good looking.

I used box2d (and your last tutorial about it), and my own isometric engine, and my own labyrynth generation algorythm, and I did all the 3D graphics myself and even wrote the music. I badly need a beer.

Nothing new under the sun, but it’s called TILTIT, and it’s on my website : http://www.thecaptainlied.com

Thanks for your support, and keep up the good work !

    Vincent.

  20. Vinicius on February 18th, 2010 2:47 pm

Well. I think you’re not gonna get your 20 bucks.
Because I think that I’m not gonna reach the 100$ threshold for Mochi adds. Because I think my game sucks and it’s been distributed only in Poland and I’ve got an eCPM smaller than 0.2$. After a week, I get less than 2000 impressions per day. Sorry mate, it just doesn’t work for me.
