Put a banner with your MochiAds stats in your blog

Let’s imagine you made an awesome game and monetize it with MochiAds, and want to show your readers/the world how much your game rocks, now you have an interesting option.

Thanks to Rhu from Blargh now you can have a banner showing your game stats.

I am talking about something like this

You can find an easy wizard at the official page and some more suggestions in this MochiAds forum thread.

I asked Rhu to give me more information about this project and this is what he said:

« Gathering data can be done through JSON, the link for which can be found here for example:

https://www.mochiads.com/share/stats/plant-life/2b23e0751a87928d/json/impressions?start_date=2008-10-01&end_date=2008-10-06

It works equally as well if you just type in (last time I checked, they just changed to the above format recently I noticed):

https://www.mochiads.com/share/stats//json/impressions?start_date=2008-10-01&end_date=2008-10-06

The start/end dates will obviously need to be changed.

Graphics are all done through PHP, and are updated in the morning (the JSON stats suffer from the limitation of being updated once daily :) ). I also just got told that they’re probably going to make it into an officially supported API sometime soon, so everyone should be able to make their own stats programs without much hassle (and without worry of them changing the JSON format :p ) »

That’s really nice, I should consider developing a WP widget showing game stats…

Triqui.com WordPress arcade now in beta

If you followed the Creation of a Flash arcade site using WordPress series you know I am about to release a WP Arcade theme with automatic game submission thanks to a plugin that parses MochiAds feed.

It’s time to open the beta to the public and make the site run.

It’s time to play, rate and comment games on triqui.com

Triqui.com

As soon as you comment and rate games, I will be able to improve it thanks to your feedback.

Don’t forget I am about to release both the theme and the plugin for free a few days after the end of this month so your feedback is very appreciated.

Just a couple of technical information: the theme I am designing is a mix between the free version of Revolution Blog WordPress Theme and CSSEY, while the logo was made following Icey Styles in Photoshop tutorial.

Distribute your Flash games worldwide with FlashGameDistribution

If you’re not a professional in marketing, one that loves to promote and sell games, pins, socks… whatever… Flash game marketing can be an hassle, or even a nightmare.

Unfortunately, if your game does not hit the frontpage of one of most popular portals spreading virally, you’ll have to manually submit your work to at least an hundred sites to earn some cash.

As said, it’s not a problem if you like marketing, just remember that every hour you spend in marketing cannot be spent in programming… or enjoying the summer.

That’s why I can’t wait for FlashGameDistribution (FGD from now on) to be released.

Still in a limited early beta, FGD is the last work from the creators of FlashGameLicense (read the review) and First Impressions (read the review).

FGD’s goal is assisting developers in distributing their flash games accross the internet, allowing developers to easily post their games to game portals, contact game portals, and automatically distribute their games to FGD partners.

The service will remain in beta until FGD crew will be able to count on a considerable amount of portals distributing the games through their API (I’ll review it later) and until some minor issues will be fixed.

Obviously this service is not only for developers but for portal owners too… they will be able to install an API that will automate game submissions.

I decided to test the service, as usual… this time on the developer side. Read more

The free sound dilemma

Here I am to introduce you an interesting question made by Pierre Urban.

I think we all asked this question to ourselves, and did not answer for our convenience…

Here it is:

«I’m a french developer currently coding a game.
Your blog helped me a lot with some really specific stuff about AS!
Also about monetizing =)

I really appreciate your blog but I have a problem.
My game is almost finish and I have some difficulties to find some free sounds.
The fact is that I’ll add mochiAds ad system to my game and I would like to know how to get some fine sounds.
I found two websites: www.pdsounds.org and www.freesounds.org.
But I don’t know if I can use some sounds of these since the mochiAds will make me earn a little bit money… For freesounds, the CC licence is non-commercial use. Even if it was commercial use, I would have to add every owners of the sounds in the credit which will make a very long list. But usually I do not see a very long list of people in the credits of flash games, hence I thought there was another way to have sounds…

About the music: I found somebody who is OK to let me use a music he made on newgrounds.com.
I clearly told him I will put ads with mochiAds, but he responded that if it’s not commercial then it is OK… I guess he misunderstood the thing, no? Or maybe I misunderstood…
Does putting some ads on a flash games makes the thing commercial?

Maybe you can make a new post about how to find and use musics/sounds in a flash game which uses MochiAd?
Maybe about how to create our own music/sounds using some random software?
I’m almost sure that it will be really handy for many people! =)

I really must have miss something because I don’t get why I am getting so much trouble to put some random sounds (like gun reloading, explosions, etc.) in my game just because it uses mochiAds…»

If any music/effects composer is reading, I would like to know his answer.

How (and why) to include AdSense for Search in your WP blog

If you look at the sidebar of my blog you will see AdSense for Search replaced the standard WP search.

First, I am going to explain why to do it, then how to do it in the most professional way

Why?

There are five reasons why you should use AdSense for Search

Display results in the Google way. Almost all people are used to read Google results, making its way to display results the more effective and user friendly at the moment.

Use a real search engine. Google uses its secret formula to order results by relevancy, that works better than WP search that only lists posts ordered by data.

Extend the search to other sites. With WP search, you can only search within your blog. With Adsense, you can define a list of sites to search for the query.

This is very useful if you run multiple sites covering the same topic, like this blog, triqui.com and triquitips.com.

Monetize. Results page has sponsored ads that will help you to monetize the blog.

Feedback. You can look at the top queries and know what people are looking for in your blog. And improve it. Read more

Milestone: 500,000 plays on Triqui.com

I am very happy to inform you about another Triqui.com milestone: half a million plays.

Half a million is nothing compared to big names plays, but it’s quite good for an auto-feed portal written in a day.

It took 56 days to reach the first 250,000 plays and “only” 53 for these ones.

The overall eCPM is 0.14 for the home page and $1.84 for the ingame one.

I did not make anything to promote the portal except some ingame self sponsorships as described in First Triqui’s milestone: 250,000 plays - considerations but now it’s time to revamp the portal using WordPress as said at Creation of a Flash arcade site using Wordpress.

When the new site will be ready, I am sure I’ll reach the million plays faster than now.

Stay tuned

RRODE: the second one-week game

My 10th released game is my 9th produced one.

If you wonder why Summer Couples was made a month after the game I am going to introduce now, it’s because looking for a sponsorship can take some time.

More than a month in this case.

Once I uploaded the game on FlashGameLicense I received some offers in the first week but I had to wait a month in order to get the one I think it’s the best for that kind of game.

So think twice before accepting the first offer

First of all let me introduce the sponsor: HALLPASS.

Hallpass

It’s one of the big names out there, so it does not need any additional information, but just let me remind you what Hallpass has and other sites do not have: challenges Read more

Flash and search engines: the revolution

You know Flash content is invisible to search engines. In order to have your Flash page (or game) indexed, you have to create an HTML page with some keywords, and pray.

Until yesterday.

Today, something is changing in Search Engines Optimization (SEO) techniques.

Look what Google and Adobe have to say

From Adobe

Adobe is providing optimized Adobe Flash Player technology to Google and Yahoo! to enhance search engine indexing of the Flash file format (SWF) and uncover information that is currently undiscoverable by search engines. This will provide more relevant automatic search rankings of the millions of dynamic content that run in Adobe Flash Player.

Without additional changes to content, developers can continue to provide experiences that are possible only with Adobe Flash technology without the trade-off of a loss in search indexing.

It will also positively affect the Search Engine Optimization community, which will develop best practices for building content utilizing Adobe Flash technologies, and enhance the ability to find and monetize SWF content.

From Google

Q: What do I need to do to get Google to index the text in my Flash files?
Basically, you don’t need to do anything. The improvements that we have made do not require any special action on the part of web designers or webmasters. If you have Flash content on your website, we will automatically begin to index it, up to the limits of our current technical ability.

That said, you should be aware that Google is now able to see the text that appears to visitors of your website. If you prefer Google to ignore your less informative content, such as a “copyright” or “loading” message, consider replacing the text within an image, which will make it effectively invisible to us.

Source: Improved Flash indexing

How can I get benefits from that?

If a successful SWF file will link to some external sites, maybe this will affect PageRank or at least help sites ranking.

A link to a sponsor in a successful game probably will get more valuable, and maybe people that look for your game will be able to find it in the official page and not in one portal with better ranking than your one.

Just rambling of course, but I am very very interested in it…

Fine tune your Flash game with First Impressions service

“How do I make my game better?” is the number one question Flash developers ask. Perhaps you’ve finished the game and think you’re done… but no sponsors are interested. Or perhaps you have a rough version of the game finished but have no idea how to turn it into a polished gem of a game. How do you improve your game?

First Impressions are the answer! We ask arbitrary users with wildly different gaming backgrounds to play your game for 5 minutes and give you their first impressions. They each write a paragraph of comments, along with some ratings on things like graphics quality and intuitiveness. Once you’ve gotten ten or twenty fresh opinions about your game, you’re bound to have a better idea of what to do next. And once you’ve made improvements, you can get more first impressions to see how people reacted to your changes.

First Impressions

With these words FlashGameLicense crew introduce their new service, called First Impressions (FI from now on).

If you don’t know what is FlashGameLicense (FGL from now on…), it’s a marketplace where Flash game developers and sponsor can meet. Read my review about it.

But now we are talking about the FI service. Basically, you are paying for people to play and review your game.

At this time, you may wonder why should you pay for a review when you can freely submit your game to a portal that allows people to review games and get reviews for free. Read more
